To Mother With Love

Description

My mother had sent candy at Valentines to me while I studied at M.I.T. That week a mouse got into our dormitory room one night and after a discussion with my roommate, we set a mousetrap. The night it was killed was endless; it make a sort of squeaking sound intermittently and we could hear it dragging the trap with it behind the furniture in the room. When morning came and we finally got it disposed of by the janitor, I felt relief that the mouses suffering had ended, and my guilt was soothed by having the ordeal end. My roommate and I were both too chicken to deal with the mouse any other way except to set a mouse trap. When the candy came all I could think about was St. Sebastian stuck full of arrows as Valentines Day. The writing on the mouse says "here are the yum yums I promised, love mother." I took the dead mouse and made a photograph of it before I gave it up to the janitor. The photograph was to remember that night, the terrible cries of the mouse, and mothers uncanny way of sending me a mouse for Valentines. Polaroid Corporation purchased the photograph from me and it now remains in the Polaroid Collection as one of a series of photographs they have collected from me over the years.
